A touch of history

Very interesting history of the settlement from a number of different perspectives. There is a lot to take in but it is not overwhelming. Always good to come away having learnt something. Ever so pleased to live in the 21st century.

Good local museum

Definitely worth a visit. The 20 minute or thereabouts video in the adjoining old courthouse is a good backgrounder on the development of Akaroa and the internal exhibits all add to the knowledge you will get. Do the video first before browsing the exhibits, they’ll mean more then. All free too!

Great little museum

Well worth a visit. A donation is required for entry. Included is the old courthouse building (where you can watch an informative doco on Banks Peninsula) and an original settler’s cottage (unrestored). Museum is well laid out with lots of interesting exhibits and information.

Brilliant museum. Have been twice, impressed each time. Good thing to do if you have a day of wet weather as it is all indoors. Great location right in the main street. Free entry but they do like a gold coin donation.

A must do in Akaroa

Have been to Akaroa many times, but never thought to stop by here until one rainy day!(and its free)
The museum is very modern and a lot bigger than I expected with lots of interactive displays and a lot of great display pieces which really brings the history to life.
I liked this better than Canterbury Museum so full credit to the staff who put this all together!
