Large Historic Home and grounds
Alberton is a large home to explore. Our teens loved being able to go up to the servants quarters in the attic. One of the children enjoyed dancing round in the ballroom singing one of the ’Frozen’ songs. The people on duty were enthusiastic about the place and willingly passed on their knowledge.

Devonshire tea at historic Alberton
We found this by incident and then they had tickets for Devonshire tea.
The house and park are fantastic, given an excellent umpressen of life in historic Auckland - it is stated somewhere that you feel as if the family just left, and that is so true. And they welcome us to see their fully decorated rooms including changes and additions to the house. Very inspiring.
Now, the tea. There are plenty of volunteers and they due their very best, and we might go again to support a good cause. But the tea arrangement was not as special as we had hoped and as we had experienced in other places.

Not that great
I was very disappointed with Alberton, especially after my excellent visit to Highwic earlier the same day. There was no one around to greet me or collect my admission fee; I had to interrupt a couple who were inspecting the house as possible wedding venue to figure out if anyone was actually working there. When the lady finally came she asked me "I understand you want to visit the house?" as if it was a massive surprise! The introductory talk wasn’t as interesting or detailed as that given by its sister house at Highwic and I found that although it was a bigger and grander house outside, the inside was rather plain. The ballroom and study were the main rooms of interest. It is out in the suburbs so I wouldn’t reccomend making a special journey unless you were desperate for something to do.

Well worth a visit
This is a heritage house and is well worth visiting if you are interested in old buildings etc. The friendly volunteer gave us an introduction about the house and then we wandered on our own. We purchased a small guide book for 2 NZD but there is plenty of signage in each room. There is also quite a large garden to wander round and sit in if the weather allows. It’s not open everyday so check the website for opening times.
