I came for one night and stayed two! Dinner, bed & breakfast experience made for a delightful mini break from home. Elegant country house and garden set in farmland. Faye and Alan were the perfect hosts. Lots of old world charm.
We booked Country Lane Homestay for two nights during a visit to the nearby valley for our niece’s wedding. We couldn’t have asked for a better location or more gracious hosts, and our children were as delighted as we were. The house is a bespoke expansion of the original two-bedroom house Fay & Allan bought in 1976 and now accommodates guests in three very large bedrooms. Two are side-by-side with an adjoining bathroom and sitting room and shared raised deck while one is tucked away with an ensuite and its own balcony. All the carpentry, including trim, was milled and fitted by Allan and the result is a delightful French Country home of enormous proportions. Downstairs guests may also enjoy the parlour, a very large formal lounge and formal dining room, and outside the beautiful gardens can be enjoyed with a good walk or sitting on the verandah or through the bay windows. There is ample outdoor seating and a large BBQ area with pergola and over the fence are paddocks and sheep in the foreground and wind farm atop the hills, all making for the most picturesque setting. The most delicious and indulgent continental breakfasts are presented to perfection and served in the dining room, and consist of home-grown fruits, home-made breads, cereals, eggs, bacon, etc., as requested, with a generous offering of juices, jams and jellies and of course tea and coffee. This was the ultimate in good old-fashioned hospitality and we would without doubt make a point of staying here again when next we are in the area. …
If you are going to visit Palmerston North, or its surrounding environs
I was immensely pleased with the quality of service and room provided by the Country Lane Homestay. While not too far away from Palmerston North central by car, it was pleasantly far enough into the surrounding farmlands to provide a most desirable overnight experience, free from the common noise of traffic that accompanies such a stay in any downtown centre. If you are visiting Palmerston North, and have access to a vehicle — either your own, a rental, or a friend-cum-chauffeur — then you would be regretting not staying at the Country Lane. The best accommodation in Palmerston North and its encompassing smaller endroits. Allen and Fay are simply charming and welcoming. They make you feel at home and are a delight to talk to.
Peaceful and beautiful
My husband and I stayed one night as we were in the area for a funeral. Faye and her husband looked after us like royalty. Our huge room had a wonderful view and the equally huge bed was so cosy and comfortable. We were treated to a wonderful homemade breakfast but unfortunately had to move on. Would love to return for more royal treatment. Thank you.
A real home from home with wonderful hosts
Wish we'd stayed longer! This is a beautiful house, with lovely rooms, well equipped, quiet, and spotlessly clean. Faye and Allan are wonderful hosts. As other people have said, it's like staying with your old mum and dad. They are so genuine, unassuming and homely, and look after you as if you were their own family. Added to this is Fay'e incredible cooking: everything is home grown or home made, from the chutney to the sausages, from the bread to the fruit. We honestly wished we had stayed for several days instead of the flying one day visit we made. Do go, you'll love it!
