About us

The Duke of Marlborough has been Refreshing Rascals and Reprobates since 1827 and holds New Zealand’s first liquor license. The Duke, as it is affectionately known is located on the waterfront in the picturesque village of Russell in the stunning Bay of Islands and is a great place to recharge the batteries, catch up with friends or simply enjoy the moment. With easy access to an exciting array of activities or sipping a glass of wine on our balcony there is plenty to see or do. There are three levels of accommodation our waterfront rooms with views across the water to Waitangi Treaty grounds and Paihia, bigger family rooms when you need extra space or our convenient standard rooms. All rooms have their own en-suites, Sky TV, wifi accessibility and tea and coffee making facilities. With an award winning chef and restaurant manager the restaurant at The Duke focuses on a menu packed with fresh seasonal Northland produce. The bar has an extensive list of New Zealand wines and beers – something for everyone to enjoy while watching the sunset.

An elegant stay

This hotel is so lovely. Right on the waterfront and my room, although at the back, was sunny and gorgeous. The bed was incredibly comfortable. Loved that the TV had Netflix and the bathroom products were really nice to use. I had a beautiful balcony and it felt very private. Reception staff were super friendly and professional. Robbie in the bar was delightful, full of tips for the area and gave exceptional service. I was sad to leave and will definitely come back. Great having free parking behind the hotel too, and info on the history of the hotel in the rooms. Bakeries nearby for breakfast and the hotel deck is a fantastic spot for an afternoon drink and snack.

We really lucked out with the weather, which makes a huge difference in Russell. Check in was friendly, efficient. Excellent parking available. Our room was exactly what we expected. We didn't pay for the top shelf but had a very comfy bed, and compact but clean and cosy bathroom. We ate in the restaurant overlooking the beach and watched the sun set. A perfect place to be. The food here is outstanding, at least the food we had was.

Wow!

I had no idea that this hotel faced directly onto the beach with such a lovely view. We had lunch here, the service was fast and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We both chose fish and chips, with a choice of fish, we chose Harpuka and it was delicious. The accompanying salad and dressing was perfect. A lovely old historic building, very appropriately furnished, and with lovely chandeliers in all the reception rooms. I do hope to return one day, both for the food and ambience.
