Wonderful Kiwi Farmstay
We received such a warm welcome from Carolyn & Melvin when we arrived at Fernleaf. We stayed in the Garden Room, which is very spacious and comfortable. Superb night sky easily visible through window behind bed. Carolyn is a wonderful chef and we dined like kings each morning and she prepared some sumptuous dinners while we there. Melvin is busy on the farm but takes time to explain what he is trying to achieve with his flock. It was amazing to see Melvin on his motorbike rounding up his flock. Set amongst superb scenery, with volcanoes in the background, and with easy access to all the sights and actions in the area. Would highly recommend a stay here.
Overnight stay travelling from Auckland to Wellington
Just terrific. Friendly and welcoming hosts, comfortable room and a restaurant quality meal in the evening. Will be planning to stay there in future when in the central north island. Easy to find and a genuine farm atmosphere.
Wonderful Farm Stay.
We stayed for 4 nights and did not want to leave! Carolyn and Melvyn are the most delightful, friendly and helpful people you could ever meet. Carolyn is also a brilliant chef. Melvyn is a really caring farmer, was looking after an injured cow and some orphan lambs, I loved helping to bottle feed a little runt! He also told us about his progressive sheep breeding methods. They both have lots of information and tips about the surrounding areas. Sitting by a roaring fire was the perfect way to end our days. We would love to return some day.
Lovely accommodations and excellent food!
We stayed at Fernleaf for three nights in late November. The property is lovely -- the view from the back deck is incredible. Our room was large and comfortable, with lots of extra touches (like a sweet homemade snack every afternoon). We did the farm tour which I highly recommend (especially if you don't know anything about sheep); it was so interesting and the views around the property are amazing. Plus we got to feed lambs! Carolyn and Melvin were terrific hosts and I cannot say enough good things about the food! The breakfasts were huge (cereals, yogurts, fruit, plus eggs, meat, toast, etc.) and tasty (loved the rhubarb compote). We had dinner there two nights and it was lovely to just walk three steps from our room to the dining area and have dinner/wine without driving anywhere after. We had lamb one night and fish the other and both were perfectly prepared and presented. Excellent Wifi, as well (which we did not have at some other places we stayed). And it is just 25 minutes or so from the Tongariro National Park Village, so ideally suited for doing a long day hike and then coming back and relaxing on the farm. …
Best stay in NZ
Visited this excellent place with my family with a 8 yr old child and my mother. Hosts were caring had arranged comfortable and warm rooms in this cold winter for us. 2 nights weren't enough to explore the large farm with the herds of sheep and the rest. We felt so at home. Carolyn and Melvin were great hosts. Carolyn was beyond helpful, gave good information to our itinerary and even gave me the recipe for her Anzac cookies. Not that I exaggerate, these cookies are the best I have ever had. My son loves playing with Billy and Henry (Cutie dogs) and miss them still. We felt so at home. Miss them!????
