West coast wilderness

Such a great beach, and of course the iconic Hokitika sign. Love the Wild West coast and all the sculptures people have been making with all the drift wood.

Very cool with all the driftwood sculptures.
Be careful of the waves though when you’re kneeling down taking photos - a wave surge soaked me quite nicely.

Free, fresh, ever changing

A lovely place to walk, hunt for green stone, see sculptures made of drift wood. Grab some food and have a picnic.

Beautiful beach

We brought a picnic and wandered along the beach. The kids had a quick dip (quite rough waves - not really suitable for swimming when we were there). We made sandcastles and collected sparkling stones.

Driftwood Sculptures

The Hokitika Beach Sculpture event had finished a couple of weeks ago but many of the eclectic sculptures remain on the beach. Neat thing to visit if the timing works.

Art and nature.

Kilometres of beach in both directions just metres from the city. Driftwood art abounds. Lots of driftwood and rocks to fossick.

INTERESTING DRIFTWOOD SIGNS.

Hokitika is the only large town centre which is on the West Coast, located by the beach. Hokitika driftwood signs are unusual and interesting.
