Feels like your staying with Family
I went to Auckland for a work trip and had to stay the weekend so decided to venture out of the city and explore the beautiful majesty of NZ. I was incredibly fortunate as I was by myself to stumble on such a lovely and welcoming couple. Breakfast was included but they even welcomed me to join them for dinner one night and helped to organize a fly fishing adventure as well. Shirley Ann and Richard are your best bet if you want to experience a very relaxed get away with true Kiwi hospitality. Visited back in 2011, but looks like they're still going strong :) Lauren USA
We spent two nights at this comfortable and clean B&B/home-stay and really enjoyed the hospitality and company of Shirley-Ann and Richard. They were forthcoming with good recommendations of things to do when the inclement weather meant that we could not walk the Tongariro Crossing. They organised a half-day trout fishing trip with an excellent local guide, and then not only proceeded to cook our catch for dinner, but also sent us on a complementary hot-springs dip in a nearby facility. We shared a lovely meal together (Shirley-Ann is a pretty good cook) and enjoyed stimulating conversation and a few laughs over a glass of wine. One thing to note is that the feel of this place is more home stay than B&B as you share their living room, and pass through it to get to the upstairs rooms (Tongariro/Hinemaiaia). It's also a little way from town in a housing estate, which may be an issue if you don't have a car. This place also seems to cater for the more mature crowd, but saying that, my partner and I (in our late 20s) had a really enjoyable time, and would definitely stay here again. …
Wonderful relaxing stay..
We stayed two nights here and thoroughly enjoyed the very comfortable and spacious bedroom as well as the tranquil environment. The bedroom has a lovely view of the garden and further to Lake Taupo. The hosts, Richard and Shirley-Ann, were very friendly and kind and a lovely breakfast is served in their dining room with a wide selection including a cooked breakfast made to order! Like other reviewers, the homemade cake and fresh flowers in the in the bedroom were very much appreciated too. They even have a Nespresso coffee machine which delighted my husband (the only one we came across in NZ!). All the attractions of the region are within easy reach and you will definitely leave with a smile on your face after a stay here.
We stayed only one night here but thoroughly enjoyed the evening with our sociable and interesting hosts Shirley- Ann and Richard. A special welcome and very nice touch was flying the flags of their guests' home countries. Breakfast was wonderful. As pointed out by other reviewers, the location is handy for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (which we didn't do!). There is plenty of opportunity for easier shorter walks in the vicinity, too. Very warm welcome!
We enjoyed staying with Richard and Shirley very much. Thay gave us the feeling that we were very welcome and that they enjoyed looking after us. The room was comfortable and spacious and had a beautiful view. The breakfast and the daily cakes were yummy. The location is quiet, but within driving distance of different eateries. We would highly recommend this B&B, which could serve nicely as a base for visiting Lake Taupo, Rotorua, Waitomo and for walking the Tongariro Crossing.
