Pretty on Mt. Pirongia.

We have wandered on this lovely walk several times now and highly recommend it to anybody of any age. It’s absolutely delightful in the cool of our splendid native bush.

Lovely easy walk

Although a bit of a drive to get here, there are numerous walks available. The Mangakara Nature Walk is an easy circular walk on downward well formed path (no roots to trip over) thru beautiful NZ forest culminating in a lovely stream that you can hear gently tinkling louder & louder as you come closer. Timed at 1 hr it is exactly right for a slow walk down & up. There are 4 sets of steps but they are short. Plenty of resting seats for the return journey.

Pleasant Short Hike

If you are limited on time, this is a pleasant, short and easy hike in Pirongia Forest. Longer and steeper tracks in the forest are also available. Nice area and fairly close to the Waitomo Cave area.

A slice of New Zealand forest

We first visited Mangakara shortly after arriving from the UK and from the start found it to be a wonderful example of New Zealand forests. The thing about New Zealand flora and fauna is that at first it looks familiar but then you realise it is in fact completely different to anywhere else.

The short (+/- 1hour) walk at Mangakara is enchanting and interesting, fabulous trees and ferns + nice water features, very suitable for all + young families. We enjoyed it so much we went back often over the next six weeks there and each time it got better. I have had a knee replacement and found this walk quite reasonable. If you’re in better shape, I’m told (by my daughter & son-in-law) who live nearby, the view from the top is very good but it is something of a 5 to 6 hour walk + hard climbing. I can also say my son-in-law speaks very highly of the web of off-road cycle tracks that cover the adjoining Pirongia volcanic mountain.

All-in-all well worth a visit for short or long walks + cycling + afterwards refuel at one of the very good cafes in the town of nearby Priongia.

Easy walk, big trees & free

Great little loop walk on Mt Pirongia, took our kids. Easy track with informative signs along they way. Massive 50m+ Kahikatea tree, Rimu and other large trees to be seen. There is a shelter at the start of the track, information about Pirongia and all the tracks and also basic toilets. There a viewing platform close to the start and you cross a beautiful stream twice on the loop track. Good alternative to Maungatautari with the added benefit of cafes at Pirongia village only a 5 min drive away.
