Motuihe is a delight.

Close to Auckland and providing shelter and beautiful beaches in all winds. The fishing is good too. Also worth checking the island’s history

Restoring nature

I went there to volunteer in the native plants restoration project. Took Red Boats there (the boats were very slow and took a long time to get there). This volunteer run project has done a good job revegetating most of the island, although there is still plenty of work to do.

As the boat trip took such a long time, and we had to walk quite a long way to the place where we weeded and planted, there wasn’t much time left for doing actual work. This is a shame as it was a wasted opportunity.

Advise for those who want to volunteer - bring large water containers (it gets hot in the garden and you will need the water) and bring your own tools - loppers, saw, tough gardening gloves (you will need them when you deal with gorse). The tools provided were blunt and gloves holey!

Advise for the organisers - perhaps use the tractor to bring volunteers to the work area faster, this way there is more time to do the work. Perhaps also have large water containers where volunteers can fill up.

Great for a day trip

Nice place to visit on a beautiful sunny day. Avoid the traffic and catch a ferry across for a quiet day trip away from hustle and bustle of the city. Safe and clean beach as well as bush walk. Great camping site with clean running water. Good fishing spot as well.

Work Volunteer Day

Been here a few times previously, but time is only making this better each visit! 11 of us from work along with a few other groups took the slow ferry for a day of planting and some of us also got stuck in to removing ’weeds’ (including a few weeds that were trees!)
As a recreation reserve run by the Department of Conservation (DoC) it is public access and has basic facilities (a main toilet block and some water for campers plus a small info centre run by volunteers), walking tracks and some beautiful beaches. There are now Kiwi, Tuatara and a flourishing population of Saddleback (native birds almost believed extinct), skinks etc.
Well worth a visit if you are in the area and have time.

Fantastic example of Eco-restoration

Motuihe Island has been undergoing massive transformation over th past decade. After a massive pest eradication effort, native plants and birds have been reintroduced. It is a beautiful island and there are great nature walks. Kiwi, tui and tuatara are present on the island. Getting there is challenging - the ferry is infrequent, although private boats and charters do go there.
