Not for the faint hearted
The track is steep at the beginning and well marked. The track is easy to follow and there are lots of rocks to clamber over. There is a section where there are chains and a steep ladder to connect the track. There is another section where there is a chain that goes up about 30 metres. I would suggest going with at least one other able person but otherwise it’s adventurous!
Do it before you get too old
Did the Waikare track from Karioi Rd because we were a 69 yr old with bad knees, a 70 yr old with reconstructed ankle, and a 6yr old grandson dreaming of Everest. After a week of rain the track was really muddy, and needed care in lots of places. Yep proper hiking boots would be an advantage but our walking shoes did OK. 2 hours to the top and 2 hours back (because of the slipperiness) Worth it for the views from the top and the smile on the 6 yr olds face.
A tough one but a good one.
First thing going up Karioi is to take some water to drink and a jacket as it can get cold and windy at times depending on weather. A lot of leg work here and a reasonable level of fitness is required. There is some fairly extensive stepping in this climb. You will be using both hands and feet to climb as you pull yourself up here and there. The odd chain and ladder to climb as well. All this makes it challenging but fun.
At times you will be close to the edges but in a safe way. If its a windy day hold onto your hat or you’ll lose it to the wind as mine flew over the side at great knots at the top. A tip here is to wear some gloves up to grab onto things. i have used hiking sticks but found them more of a nuisance. Depends on what makes you tick. Wear some good solid tramping boots or trail shoes. Be prepared for Mud on the track sometimes over a foot deep in places. If your careful you can navigate around this.
Have fun and enjoy this scenic tramp.
Has been on the bucket list
Has been on the bucket list for a long time, worried about the reviews of mud but no problem at all, mid winter but has been dry the week previous freezing & windy at summit but awesome views to Mt Egmont. We did the Karioi road through farmland side. Just over an hour to the top
Two hours to the lookout. Awesome views of the coast line both ways. Track is muddy and boggy, but well worth the effort.
