Amazing must do
This tour is an absolute must do. Not only is this tour the only way that you can get up Mt Tarawera, it is also a real privilege to be able to walk up there. We had two guides who shared lots of information with us as we went around. They were kind and very patient. In our group there were young and old people. One person was afraid of heights. So one guide stayed back with them and gently encouraged them. The other guide went on ahead with the rest of the group. No one was left behind and no one was held up. It was really really good. Together everyone was able to complete the walk. From the top we were able to see Whakaari ( White Island) , whale island, Tongariro, Ngaruhoe and Mt Ruapehu.... amazing Loved it and would definitely do it again.

Mt Tawawera
This is a great day out. Interesting history.
Best done on a good day where you can admire the views. Nice to have the input from the guides Steve and Frank. The walk is not particularly difficult. You are driven to 950m and the summit is 1100m. The scree slope was fun to come down.

GREAT SCENERY.
Excellent experience with AATKings in a massive group. Mount Tarawera is a volcano on the outskirts of Rotorua but infamous for its eruption.

Half hour float-plane flight was brilliant.
We took the 30 minute float plane flight from Rotorua out over Mt Tarawera and it was amazing. Every seat in the plane has a perfect view and it flies slow enough that you don’t miss anything and you get great picture ops. Thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting to get a great overview of the whole Rotorua geothermal area.

Spectacular
Climb the mountain or view it from the Lake, or do both; either is spectacular and well worth the effort involved. The hiking track up the mountain is for the reasonably fit only, others can take the option of a private car (not recommended as the track is very rough) or a 4-wheel drive tour. Go down the loose gravel into the crater or walk around the rim or both. Probably best to research a guided tour unless you are local or an experienced tramper, the guides knowledge of the history of the mountain and location is worth the cost alone.
For the less fit, the option of a boat-trip across the Lake from near the Landing Cafe on Tarawera Road (off Spencer Road) is a very good alternative - or do both!

Outstanding hike around Mt Tarawera
We had an amazing Christmas trip with our adult children and my 78 year old father. A spectacular place to visit truly highlighting the force of nature. Our guides Ben and Steve were exceptionally knowledgeable about the history and geology of the area, and made the trip a real experience. Highly recommended.

Outstanding hike
Our tour guide Steve was both knowledgeable and entertaining. The hike was moderately difficult. Lots of spectacular views. I highly recommend this for those looking for an out of the way hiking tour.

Try this if you are fit!
This is a good guided rek round part of the rim of the extinct volcano, with a moderate climb to the highest point, scary 45-degree "slide" down to the basin and then a hard climb up to the vehicle park. Transport to & from your accommodation or the city centre. (At nearly 72yrs, am I the oldest to take part?)

Flew over via Volcanic Air float plane
In 1886, Mt. Tarawera unexpectedly erupted, tearing a 10 mile fissure in the land and killing 150 people. Seeing it from the air was a unique and special experience. The plane launched from the water and floated into the air like a swan. In addition to the dramatic and deeply oxidized red rocks, we saw the forests, a sulphurous bay and geysers along the lake’s edge. Wow!
