Lovely bush walk, but caution needed

As a walk this is pleasant, but a word of caution, this should only be done by the sure footed.
The track in is dirt and stone and has some steep parts, so even with a little precipitation this track is quite slippery: wear good shoes.
Secondly, the very last section to the organ pipes is a steep climb over stones and rocks: not for the faint hearted or kids.
Parking is very limited at the start too, maybe for 4-6 cars only, depending on how they are parked!

Organ Pipes Track

I started from the Mt Cargill road car park. As others have said, it’s a pretty tiny little carpark and can only really fit a few cars in on the side of a winding rural road.

I don’t consider myself fit in any way, I can walk on flat ground all day with no issue but a couple of minutes uphill and I’m panting and red faced but I still made it up. Multiple quick, breath catching breaks and I made it up the steep incline in about 20 minutes. Well worn path with some steps along the way, mostly in the shade. There’s a series of steps exposed to the sun and then after this the climb is a lot more gentle. The path then forks with the left side heading to the pipes and the right continuing on Mt Cargill. This is well sign posted. I was then out of breath again for the climb up the fallen stones but that was pure fear hahahaha. It’s actually pretty easy to climb up the stones, just take it really slow and test where you’re putting your feet before weight bearing as some are a little loose. Excellent views over the peninsula await.

All-in-all, a moderately difficult but relatively short walk that’s well worth the views.

Organ pipe rocks

We rented a car from Pegasus at the cruise port and drove to the Organ pipes trail. Fairly short up hill hike through lovely wooded area. Lots of singing birds. You come out at the bottom of the organ pipes and need to climb up the rocks to get a better look! Not for people that have mobility issues.

Amazing Views & Hike!

We almost skipped this as I wasn’t sure how interesting this would be but I’m so glad we went! It was one our favorite things we did in New Zealand and we were there for a month.

The parking lot isn’t large. The way people were parked, only 3 cars could fit. We initially started hiking down the other path and then realized this wasn’t correct. The path is in the parking area, not across the road.

As someone mentioned, the path is well-marked. We consider ourselves decently in shape and we were sweaty from the hike. I had also read somewhere that it was a ’short hike’ and perhaps in the grand scheme of things, that’s the case but it’s not a mere 10 minutes either.

Once we got to the pile of rocks, we carefully picked our way up until we found a decent area to climb up (be careful!). You can tell once you get to the top that a lot of people have forged small paths, in trying to find good views. We found a couple okay ones but nothing great, other than when you first get to the top, before you start barreling into the thick vegetation.

Other than two other people who were leaving when we got there, we were the only ones there. We made sure we were off the rocky area before the sun set but otherwise, the path is safe to be on after dark.

Like I mentioned, it was one of our favorite things we did. If you have a spare 1.5ish hours and are in the area, I would suggest going. It was amazing!

Hike up Mt. Cargill to the sign on the path

This is a pretty hearty hike, lots of straight up incline but the path is well marked, even if the steps are reaches for normal-sized legs. At Organ Pipes, the rocks are smooth, precariously perched, and (it is obvious by now) very high up there in nose-bleed territory.

Very steep trail at the beginning

Track goes all the way to the top of Mt. Cargill, with the ’organ pipes’ rock formations after the very steep initial climb. We were going to hike to the top, but one of our party didn’t make it up the steep bit, so we went to the organ pipes and back. They are certainly interesting rocks, hexagonal shaped with maybe a 10 inch diameter. Curious what geology led to them. Some decent views of the bay on the way up. Do NOT do this if it’s rained recently. It had not rained when we climbed, and the trail was still a bit slick in spots. Still I found it a very nice little hike. It was about 1/2 mile walk and maybe ~500 ft of elevation?

Super trek

This is a steep trek up from a small car park to a memorable location with the uncommonly shaped rocks and a great view.

The path is formed into steps and is manageable. The day we went it had rained but there is good drainage.

Highly recommended either as a stand alone trek or as part of the MT. Cargill hike.

Fascinating place

Short but steep walk to fascinating rock formations. Climbing the pile of basalt pillars is cool! And the view from the top is worth it :)
