A beautiful mixture of mountain bush and wide open sub-alpine scenery.
Both aged in our 60’s we walked from Flora carpark through to the Cobb Valley (3 nights 4 days) staying at the Gridiron hut, Salisbury Lodge and Balloon Hut and passing by Lake Peel on the way to Trilobite Hut in the Cobb Valley. Thanks to the on-going hard work of DOC and Friends of Flora with their trapping programme we were privileged to hear the rare Whio in the Flora stream. There are some very nice side walks along the route for even more enjoyment. A highlight was the view ascending into the Cobb Valley. The entire walk is not demanding physically, but care needs to be taken to prepare as the weather can change very quickly.

Very nice hike to do in good weather
Beautiful scenery on this less crowded loop of about two nights. Checks the weather report properly as the ridge part can be dangerous in fog or rain, and be prepared for backcountry conditions. The lower route through the forest is a bit boring, but the Gordon’s pyramid way is beautiful and nicely challenging if you have some hiking background. Good huts in the way, not much places for the tent.

Stunning hike!
I did this hike in Autumn 2018 and it was gorgeous. The first hut on the mountainside was tiny and quaint, the mountain views from there were amazing as you climb higher up. I watched the sunset and sunrise from just above the hut which was beautiful. The next day we detoured up to Mt Arthur which was fun and we had clear blue skies so the 360 degree view was great. The second hut is large and newer in tussocky, marshy area and the hike down from there was quite boggy to begin with but very fun. We stopped off along the way to look at the cave/cliff shelters which you can stay in overnight if you like - so cool. I’ll definitely be stopping in some of those if I end up back in the area. Gorgeous hike :).

Great circuit
This is a really incredible circuit which covers a great variety. Plenty of huts and interesting sites and history. The cave shelters in Flora Valley are fantastic for little kids.

Tough but stunning on a clear day!
We completed this round trip with our little children aged 5 and 7, who loved it - the mum not so much... Arguably, the track was a lot harder than expected. The first day we walked 5hrs from Flora car via Flora Hut and Gridiron Hut to Salisbury Lodge. A relatively easy track, quite muddy towards the end. The next day started with a mud bath to get up to Gordons Pyramid, the ascend was a killer (for some). After that the track went down the ridge, then up, then down, then up, then down, then up - mainly across tussock etc. You get the drift? Quite tiring, especially since one of the ups included an unexpected full on climb up a rock face (my children’s favourite part!). Seven hours later and carrying our children and their backpacks on top of our backpacks, we arrived back at Flora car park. Be prepared for a big hike!
