Location / Nearby Te Puia

Description

Te Puia spans 70 hectares within the historic Te Whakarewarewa Valley, on the edge of town. We are home to the world famous Pohutu geyser, to mud pools, hot springs, to silica formations to the Kiwi bird and the national schools of wood carving, weaving, stone and bone carving. We have shared these treasures with manuhiri (visitors) for 170 years and proudly continue that legacy today.

Up close and personal

This was our second visit, the first being the day before lockdown 2020. This time around we had the amazing fortune to get a closer look at the erupting guysers. The staff member who allowed this told us that they are going to be allowing small groups closer in the future and even allow swimming in one of the pools. We felt honoured to be 2 of the first members of the public since 1970 to get so close. Absolutely amazing experience

If your in Rotorua you must visit

Great place to visit, the gallery is excellent and very interesting just in its self, the thermal park is well worth the entrance fee alone. Must visit place.

Definitely a must-see!

You’ve definitely got to visit Te Puia if you’re in Rotorua or surrounds. It’s a great way to learn about Maori culture and history, and to see first hand the impressive work that the residents do, such as the intricate wood carvings in the wharenui (meeting houses) and beautiful textiles made by the weavers.

You’ll get to see the biggest active geyser in the southern hemisphere up close and personal, and also get to see iconic kiwis in the conservation center.

A special shout out to Kahu who was our tour guide on the day - he made the tour extra memorable with his friendliness and great sense of humour.

Definitely a must-see!

Very quiet

Te Puia is close to Rotorua, so easy to get to, and probably the best place to see geysers, which naturally perform regularly here. There are also plenty of mud pools. It was very quiet when we were there, thanks to COVID. We only saw 7 other visitors. The previous time we visited, in November 2019, there were hundreds of tourists.
We were lucky enough to see 2 out of 3 of the kiwi in the Kiwi House - last visit we saw none of them!
Even though we have been here numerous times when visiting Rotorua, it is still worth returning to. I hope visitor numbers pick up soon for Rotorua, which is looking so quiet and sad.

Excellent night tour

The Geyser By Night tour has it all; a geothermal wonderland, an authentic insight into Maori culture, the occasional sound of kiwi and excellent guides. Highlights include Pohutu geyser, mud pools, boiling water, sipping hot chocolate, Maori legends, a memorable rendition of Pokarekare Ana, outstanding carvings, thoughtful landscaping and easy walking tracks. Our guide Tamati had a thorough knowledge of the physical and cultural environment. His professionalism was balanced with a warm manner, an easy pace and tone of speaking and he is an accomplished singer. Perez added to the experience with his guitar playing and interesting snippets of information. The variety and interest in this tour, with the night sky adding atmosphere, makes it a superb example of NZ tourism at its best.

Spectacular nature & great guided tour including kiwis, mud pools, geysers & yummy steam pudding

Arrived there shortly after 9 am and had the park almost for ourselves, which was amazing and would really recommend when you are around off-season to really enjoy and take in this amazing scenery. At 10:30am we joined the guided tour with Kahu (hope I remembered correctly ^^). Which was such a blast and a great experience learning more about Maori culture, art & crafting. The tour was very informative, fun and would definitely recommend. Afterwards we took our time strolling through the whole park ourselves. You can really find here a spectacular piece of nature!!!

Great tour if you’re interested in local lore and the heritage of the land.

TL;DR. Incredible spot to visit, especially if you’re interested in learning about Maori culture and some geological/nature tidbits.

The fiancé and I went here on our holiday, very informative and interesting tour, the guides were enthusiastic about what they were saying and you could tell they really care about the heritage of the location.

We went on the guided tour, then walked around on our own for a bit, and recommend you take the guided tour (unless you have kids as they might want to move around fast) simply because the little pockets of information you’re given throughout the tour by the guide really tie the whole experience together.
Was very enjoyable as a couple, and would ge good for a family as well!
