Amazing Hospitality

Give Melva and Hilton two or three nights, more if you can, and you will be treated to hospitality usually found among your best friends and closest family. They are truly amazing hosts, and eager to share with you their little piece of paradise in NZ's wonderful Northland. Be sure to ask to have a look around the garden, the boardwalked wetland, and the nearby glow worm caves (free!). Sitting out on their deck is like being in a treehouse, surrounded by wildlife and verdant natural beauty.

Magiical Stay at The Riverbank Homestay and B&B

My wife and I were referred to the Riverbank Homestay by a mutual friend we were visiting on Weiheke Island. The friend contacted Hilton and helped book the three nights we spent at this magical place. We were the only couple staying with Melva and Hilton (the owners) at this time. After showing us our well appointed spacious room and after settling in they suggested some activities to do and places to see. Better yet, they were personally going to show us the hidden corners of this northern coastal region. This was exactly what we had been hoping for. For the next three days I didn't have to drive the rental car on the left side of the road going places only the GPS had a complete view of. Hilton and Melva are birders. They are involved in a project for observing animal behaviors at various locations on their expansive property and beyond. They have many cameras installed at specific sites such as marshlands, burrows, ponds etc. We accompanied them on one of the days when they went to maintain batteries and retrieve sd cards in some of the cameras. I loved the process, since I am a photographer myself. In their home, we joined them for breakfast, lunch and dinner at their personal dining room table. They grow their own vegetables and Melva cans jams from her fruit trees and Oh! she brews killer ginger beer!. The purpose of this longish review is to give you an idea how unique an experience this was to us. To cap our stay there, Hilton helped us book a night in Hellensville closer to Auckland in preparation for our departure from NZ. …

A magical end to our New Zealand adventure

We couldn't have ended our amazing month-long visit to New Zealand in a more perfect way! Our hosts, Melva and Hilton, provided us with a beautiful, serene, and peaceful B&B for the last three days of our trip. Melva and Hilton also shared with us their vast knowledge of sailing, ornithology, gardening, bee keeping, Maori culture, and local history. Our large and airy, immaculate, bright and sunny room was decorated with creative displays of NZ culture, local artists, and local authors. Lavender scented the air. Melva also left a sampling of her home-made tea bread to snack on each day. Breakfast included a wealth of delicious and healthy options using local produce to ready us for our days of hiking and exploring the Tutukaka coast. Our hosts couldn't have been more gracious and welcoming. We immediately felt like family. We are definitely looking forward to our return to The Riverbank and to the Northland. …

Uniquely NZ

Melva and Hilton welcome guests with the sincerity and informality of long-time friends. Their lovely home is nestled in native bush with a very comfortable, modern daylight basement en suite for us. These are genuinely Interesting people, knowledgeable about the local environment, their country and much of the world, so rich conversation complemented the delicious meals, much of which came from her garden. Meals can be adapted in individual needs. I asked about glow-worm caves, so Hilton drove us out to one nearby and guided us to the magic therein, one of my favorite NZ experiences and one I might not have ventured without his support. He also showed us the ocean-going boat he is building, quite a treat. They are located only 6 km from Tutukaka, site of extraordinary dive and snorkeling adventures, but the Riverbank gave us a much more interesting and quiet stay away from the tourist bustle. …

How’s the serenity

A 1 night stop left us wanting more. Hilton and Melva are your hosts in their beautiful home surrounded by lush gardens and wild animals. We were a little perplexed by the quail crossing sign but then saw that the quails actually do use it ???? Yummiest breakfast with home made stewed fruits, organic cereals and home made preserves - all enjoyed with lovely company of our hosts. The room and en-suite are pristine and very comfortable. All the little things are in place including fridge a selection of teas and coffees. Thanks Hilton and Melva we will return one day x
