Great place to stop
Good level of fitness required. We didnt see glow worms as you have to walk quite deep into the caves through some water to see. We have a 6 year old with us and just enjoyed walking and looking around the caves. Quite a drive out of the way but worth it.
Great glowworms experience for free
Forget about the Waitomo Caves! At the Waipu Caves you can see glowworms for free - and you can take as many photos as you want. The short walk into the caves and to its end is a little bit of an adventure and your feet can get wet and muddy, but it’s worth it.
Great view from top, since track extended in 2019
You need good walking shoes for this one. Decent fitness is needed, as there are lots of steep bits! Muddy and slippery sections, but it was a worthwhile 45 minute uphill walk through bush up to the ridge where you’ll find a great view to the north. (The DOC ranger told us it had recently been extended to lead to this lookout.) You won’t find any caves on this walk. (The main big Waipu Cave, which is stunning, is at the start near the car park, not on this walking track.) 1 hour 30 estimated return time is about right, as it’s slower going than I would have expected, with all the mud.
Do the Cave, forget the traxk
Track goes no where! Nothing to see and just had to turn around and come back but the cave is amazing so I would just park up and do this instead, don’t bother with the walk
Its so short!
It’s interesting and all but calling it a walkway is somewhat misleading. The cave is quite cool for kids but again pretty short.
