BE PREPARED

Be prepared for a walk past the local sewage works, a few boggy patches, and a long haul on the loop walk past the wrecked ship.
The small map from the tourist office is misleading - it looks a reasonable walk at first glance but really is a 3 hour slog across featureless marshland.
Welly boots are recommended for wet stretches off the boardwalks.
There is wildlife of interest - we saw pied stilts.

Lovely place to walk and bird watch

Walk out to see the ship wreck and spot the birds along the way - bring boots or gumboots in Winter as the path gets quite wet.

Smelly

My husband and I visited this walkway in April and the South Island had just had an unexpected cold snap with snow and rain so when we visited it was raining and absolutely freezing so I think we walked for about half hour then decided to turn around and go home. It was very smelly as well due to the sewerage plant but it probably would have been a lovely walk on a nice day.
