Part of your forest walk - Yaka 7th biggest

I think it’s cute that the biggest and the 7th biggest are on the same trail. Not sure where the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th are, but there you go! All part of the rich tapestry of forests. Well marked and good trail that guides you to 4 sisters Kauri Trees. Enjoy these amazingly majestic trees.

A beautiful walk through the Kauri forest to the Yakas Kauri.

It’s a superb stroll through the magnificent Kauri forest to see the Yakas Kauri, the 7th biggest Kauri in New Zealand with a girth of 12.29 metres and a total height of 43.9 metres. It should take round 40 mins. to reach the Yakas Kauri but it took us over an hour to do the 2.5km* walk. OK. We did stop for lots of gawking and photos and there’s a lot of glorious Kauris, bush and birds to gawk at. The track is easy walking and is part boardwalk part dirt track. On the way is the spectacular “Cathedral Grove” made up of a splendid collection of Kauris.

It’s vital to stay on the track as the Kauris are being killed by"Kauri dieback disease", a type of fungus which is spread by soil movement,. On entry to the track is a cleaning station which cleans and disinfects the soles of your shoes. The roots of the Kauri are very delicate which is another reason for having the boardwalk.

The Yakas Kauri was discovered by, surprise surprise, Nicholas Yakas who probably discovered it in the 1920s, but only revealed its location in the 1960s.

An awe inspiring walk through the magical Kauri forest. Suitable for children but not prams.

awe-inspiring

Make sure you go early in day or in evening to have time with the trees by yourself ... then breathe in their majesty.

Humbling!

This wasn’t the biggest of the trees in the area but it’s still a fantastic walk and I’d highly recommend doing if you’re here!

most beautiful of the many kauri walks

The yakas walk is one of the longer ones. But you’ll be rewarded with the most beautiful of the kauris. And you might be alone with it there.

Amazing 40 minute walk

This walk is amazing through the kauri forest. Some parts are on boardwalks to help preserve the forest and when you get to the end it will all be worth it to see this huge tree. Fascinating.

Worth the 40 minute walk

Yakas is the 7th largest Kauri in the area about 134m2 of wood. Not close to the size of Tane or Te Matua Ngahere, never the less he stands majestic, about 40 min walk down the track, in the same area as Te Matua.
Take your time to enjoy the other Kauri you pass on the way, there are many. You will walk through Cathedral Grove, a stand of at least a dozen Kauri - if you take your time you will experience the spiritual dimension of the area.
Worth stopping and reflecting on human impact on our environment.

Don’t leave the path as you can add to the spread of the Kauri die back disease and spray you shoes on entering and leaving forrest
